Wales sees 25.7% rise in public EV chargepoints

The number of public electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints in Wales has increased by 25.7% over the past year, according to new Department for Transport figures.
Between October 2024 and October 2025, 780 new public chargers were installed, bringing the total number across Wales to 3,813. The growth rate is higher than the UK-wide increase of 23% over the same period.
The UK Government said the rise gives drivers greater confidence that they can charge up conveniently wherever they travel.
Nationwide, more than 15,000 new public charging devices were added in the past year, including over 17,000 rapid or ultra-rapid chargers capable of charging a car to 80% in 20 to 40 minutes.
A spokesperson said a new chargepoint is now being added to the UK network every 33 minutes, as part of wider plans to deliver 100,000 more chargers and support British industry through the government’s £381 million Plan for Change.
Minister for Decarbonisation, Keir Mather, said: “There’s never been a better time to go electric – chargepoints are up 23% in a year, and we’re helping drivers save with discounts of up to £3,750 on new electric cars — all part of our Plan for Change.
“We’re also cutting red tape so renters and those without driveways can access affordable home charging, making it easier and cheaper for everyone to make the switch.”
The figures come as the government consults on proposals to make it easier for households without driveways to install home chargers, potentially saving drivers £250 on planning fees.
Vicky Read, chief executive of ChargeUK, said: “The EV charging industry is pulling out all the stops to help drivers go electric, investing billions of private capital into high-quality charging — supporting the government’s ambitions for growth and decarbonisation in the process.
“The vast majority of EV drivers use the public networks and an increasing number will be wholly reliant on them. Meaning we need the right mix of affordable and easy to access charging at home and at work, on-street, en-route and at destinations to ensure everyone can make the switch.”
