Three men jailed for vicious attack on a man in Chester

Three men have been jailed for their involvement in a violent attack on a man in Chester, leaving the victim with severe injuries, including multiple stab wounds.
Benjamin Coote, 33, of no fixed abode in Chester, pleaded guilty to section 18 assault and possession of a bladed article.
Coote was sentenced to five years and three months. Paul Cullen, 50, of St Marks Road, Chester, and Stephen Fletcher, 44, of Bramley Way, Kirkby, were found guilty of section 20 assault after a seven-day trial and were both sentenced to three years in prison.
The sentencing took place at Chester Crown Court on Friday, 10 January 2025.
The court heard that at approximately 7.20pm on 6 June 2024, police responded to reports of a violent assault in an alleyway near Abbots Nook, Chester.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim on Lorne Street, covered in blood. The three attackers had fled the scene.
The victim was taken to Aintree Hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries, including two puncture wounds to his back and another above his ear.
CCTV footage helped police reconstruct the events leading to the attack.
The footage showed Stephen Fletcher arriving at the scene with the victim, followed shortly by Benjamin Coote and Paul Cullen.
Coote was seen approaching the victim with a large knife and making multiple stabbing motions as the victim sat on the ground.
Fletcher and Cullen joined the attack, assaulting the victim alongside Coote, who continued the knife assault. The trio fled, leaving the injured victim behind.
Detective Constable Lorna Postlethwaite, who led the investigation, described the assault as “an abhorrent act of violence” and welcomed the sentencing.
She said: “I welcome the sentences handed to the three defendants in this case who inflicted horrendous injuries to the victim in an abhorrent act of violence.
“Chester LPU officers, response, beat and CID worked tirelessly to find those responsible for this shocking attack while completing extensive enquiries and compiling a comprehensive file of evidence, subsequently bringing these men before the courts.
“I hope the conclusion of this case brings the victim some sense of closure and also reassures members of the community that those who commit these types of offences will be found and held accountable for their actions.”
