HyNet pipeline works bring increased traffic to Northop Hall as project team holds Ewloe drop-in tonight

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

The HyNet carbon capture pipeline team will be in Ewloe this evening for a public drop-in, as site preparation work gets under way at Northop Hall for one of the key installations on the route through Flintshire.

Liverpool Bay CCS Limited is hosting the event at Ewloe Sports and Social Club, Mold Road, Deeside, CH5 3AU, from 4pm to 7pm today, Wednesday 17 June.

No booking is required.

The session gives residents the chance to speak directly with the project team about the HyNet Carbon Dioxide Main Onshore Pipeline, which will carry captured carbon dioxide from industrial sites across north Wales and the north west of England to offshore storage fields beneath Liverpool Bay.

Separately, the project team has confirmed that site preparation work is progressing at Northop Hall for an Above Ground Installation, a surface facility that connects different parts of the pipeline network and acts as a junction point between pipelines.

The Northop Hall installation will link the main pipeline to a separate spur running to the Heidelberg Materials UK cement works in Padeswood, near Mold.

Initial fencing and topsoil removal at the site are complete, and work to level the ground and excavate foundations for the installation is due to start shortly.

Pipework and mechanical installation are expected to follow from January 2027.

Residents near Northop Hall may notice increased vehicle activity as construction compounds are established ahead of that work.

The project team said short-term, two-way traffic management will operate on the B5125 while the site access point is completed, with advance notice to be given before that begins.

The project team has also confirmed that topsoil stripping along the full length of the main pipeline is now complete, with teams finishing the work over ten weeks between March and June 2026.

The pipeline runs 31.3 kilometres from Stanlow in Cheshire to the Point of Ayr in Flintshire, roughly a quarter of the length of Hadrian’s Wall.

Pipe welding and preparation work has been running alongside the ground clearance, with installation of the pipeline itself the next phase of construction.

One of the first installation operations is already under way beneath the A494 at Aston Hill, where specialist tunnelling work started this week.

Contractors are using a technique called microtunnelling, which bores the pipeline deep underground without opening a trench at the surface, allowing the A494 to remain fully open during the works.

The tunnelling is being carried out by specialist subcontractor Joseph Gallagher Limited, working under main contractor United Infrastructure.

The work beneath the A494 requires round-the-clock operations for safety reasons and is expected to take around six days, having started in the week of 15 June 2026.

The route cuts through the heart of Flintshire, tracking from Connah’s Quay along the Dee estuary coast through Flint, Bagillt and Holywell before continuing west to Point of Ayr at Talacre.

Among the industrial sites expected to connect to the network are Padeswood Cement Works near Mold and Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power.

HyNet aims to capture 4.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year initially, rising to 10 million tonnes by 2030.

The events alternate monthly between venues in Flintshire and Cheshire, with July’s event due to be held in Cheshire.
