Tata Steel Shotton welcomes 2025 apprentices

Tata Steel has welcomed new apprentices to its Shotton site as part of its 2025 intake.
The Deeside site is one of two locations in the north of the UK, alongside Hartlepool, to receive new starters this year. In total, 31 apprentices have joined Tata Steel across the country, including 17 at Port Talbot, Llanwern and Trostre in South Wales.
Apprentices at Shotton will be learning skills in electrical and mechanical engineering, fabrication, machining and manufacturing. The company says this year’s intake joins at a pivotal moment as Tata Steel progresses with its transition to Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking.
Executives and Government ministers officially broke ground at Port Talbot in July on the new facility, which is expected to be commissioned by the end of the decade. The shift is part of Tata’s wider move to low-CO₂ steelmaking.
Tata Steel UK’s Chief HR Officer, Chris Jacques, said:
“Our industry and the skills we need are changing rapidly. These apprentices join at the start of a new chapter and will help shape the future of sustainable steel in the UK for generations to come.”
Matthew Davies, a former Tata Steel apprentice who is now Technical Training Manager, added:
“This cohort is joining us at a truly historic moment. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come. While tools and processes evolve, the opportunity to gain skills, grow professionally, and contribute to a more sustainable future remains as strong as ever.”
Tata Steel says its Shotton site, alongside others in the UK, will play a key role in the business during the transition, with apprentices helping to develop the workforce needed for the future.
