As Remembrance weekend approaches, the curtain is set to rise on the premiere of a play which tells the story of a Liverpool family torn apart by the Blitz during WW2. All proceeds from the production are set to benefit a major United Nations Refugee charity.

“WAITING”, the latest full-length stage play from Chester-based playwright Gail Young, premieres at The Garret Theatre at Storyhouse in Chester on Thursday 9th November.

Produced by Gail Young Productions, the play will be directed by local award-winning Director Yvette Owen.

Loosely based on Gail’s own family history, “WAITING” depicts a city grappling with the challenges and heartache that WW2 and the Liverpool Blitz brought.

The Wright family is torn asunder, and there’s a growing feeling of vulnerability against an imminent foe. Loved ones are separated by the call to arms, children are evacuated to rural Wales, and as time goes by, they wait.

They await letters from their dear children, news of a son, a brother, and a sweetheart now fighting for King and Country. They anticipate instructions from the Government, for the sirens to blare and bombs to drop.

The play showcases a gifted group of young actors, joined by singers from the Chester Operatic Society and Chester-based musicians, narrating the tale of the Wright family.

The production also integrates digital imagery and some filmed segments, offering an added layer to this dynamic show.

Expressing her excitement at seeing her script for “WAITING” come alive, Gail remarked, “The ensemble, musicians, crew, and director have poured their heart into understanding my script.

I’m immensely grateful for their dedication, talent, and hours spent in personifying the words and vision on paper.

The nuances in characterisation, ambiance, costumes, and set for “WAITING”‘s premiere have been spectacular. I’m eager to see the culmination and gauge the audience’s response.”

Gail further mentioned, “All earnings from our ticket sales for ‘WAITING’ will be contributed to UNHCR (United Nations Commissioner For Refugees) to assist families globally who’ve had to escape from war and strife. This charity endeavours to furnish basics like shelter, food, water, healthcare, and safety. Being entirely dependent on charitable contributions to realize these objectives, we’re honoured to extend our support to UNHCR.”

“WAITING” at The Garret Theatre at Storyhouse in Chester on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th November at 7.30 pm and Saturday 11th November at 2 pm and 7.30 pm.

Comprehensive details of WAITING are available at www.storyhouse.com, where tickets can be reserved online. For other queries, the box office can be reached at 01244 409113. Direct bookings at Storyhouse are also an option.
