Sponsorship sign applications submitted for around 20 Flintshire roundabouts

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Flintshire County Council has been asked to approve sponsorship signs at around 20 roundabouts across the county.

The applications are part of the council’s Roundabout Portfolio Sponsorship scheme, which the council says is managed on its behalf by Outdo Media, an outdoor advertising company.

Roundabouts in the first batch of applications include Penymynydd Roundabout on the A550/A5118/A5104, Dobshill Roundabout on the A549, Drome Corner Roundabout on the A548 at Garden City, the Northern Gateway Roundabout at Airfield Road, and the St David’s Park Interchange roundabout in Ewloe.

Roundabouts on the A5104 Chester Road at Broughton, on Manor Lane at Bretton, on the A548 Chester Road at Oakenholt, on the Caerwys Interchange near Holywell, on the A55 at Halkyn and at Tenth Avenue on Deeside Industrial Estate are also in the first batch.

Roundabouts at the Parkway junctions in Shotton, on Plough Lane in Aston and at the Dobshill A55 Interchange have also been included.

According to the application for Roundabout 11 at Penymynydd, registered with the council on 14 May 2026, Outdo Media is proposing to install four non-illuminated sponsorship signs on the roundabout.

This roundabout currently has advertising signs present.

The new signs would be 1000mm wide by 500mm tall, mounted on powder coated posts, with one sign facing each road entrance to the roundabout.

The first decisions are due by 9 July 2026.

The applications cover only the signs themselves. Planners will decide each application on how the signs look and whether they are safe at the roadside, not on whether the sponsorship deal itself is a good thing.

Flintshire’s roundabout sponsorship scheme allows companies to fund the maintenance and landscaping of a roundabout in return for sponsorship signs at the site.

The council’s published business page describes the scheme as a way for local businesses to reach commuters and consumers across Flintshire, and says sponsorship supports council initiatives from highways maintenance to public amenities.

In November 2023, the council’s Climate Change Committee was told a basic sponsorship package cost £2,958.43 a year for both Band A and Band B roundabouts.

The council has not published a current price for sponsorship under the Outdo Media contract.

At the same November 2023 meeting, the committee amended the policy to exclude fossil fuel companies and companies providing fossil fuel products from sponsoring roundabouts, in line with the council’s commitment to become a net zero council by 2030.

No information has yet been published on which companies are seeking to sponsor each roundabout.

Members of the public can view the applications and submit comments through the Flintshire County Council planning portal.
