RNLI warns of coastal dangers as Storm Éowyn nears

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has urged the public to stay safe as Storm Éowyn is expected to bring strong winds and potentially hazardous conditions to the Welsh coastline later this week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind today (23 January), with gusts of 50 to 60mph predicted across parts of Wales.

On Friday, an amber warning will come into effect for parts of Flintshire and north Wales, with the storm expected to cause widespread disruption and dangerous conditions.

The RNLI is advising those who may visit coastal areas this Friday and Saturday to exercise extreme caution, particularly along exposed cliffs, seafronts, and piers.

Chris Cousens, Regional Water Safety Lead for Wales, highlighted the potential dangers posed by the storm. “Storm Éowyn is set to bring potentially dangerous and uncertain conditions, so we’re asking the public to stay vigilant,” he said.

He added: “If you plan to visit the coast, the RNLI advises that you stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.”

In the event of being caught unexpectedly in the water, Chris reminded the public of the RNLI’s Float to Live advice: “Lie back in the water, extend your arms and legs, and try to relax as best as you can until you get control of your breathing.”

The charity also issued guidance on how to respond if someone else is in danger. “If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. If you have something that floats, throw it to them, but don’t enter the water yourself as you could also end up in difficulty,” Cousens warned.

The RNLI’s safety advice for stormy weather includes:

  • Staying well back from stormy seas and cliff edges.
  • Checking weather forecasts and tide times before heading out.
  • Taking a phone in case of emergencies.
  • Calling 999 or 112 and asking for the Coastguard in urgent situations.

Storm Éowyn’s arrival is likely to bring challenging conditions across much of Wales and beyond, with the amber weather warning highlighting the risks posed to those venturing near the coastline.
