Plaid Cymru is ‘in position’ to form a minority government, said Rhun ap Iorwerth who could be First Minister in just a few days time.

The comments were made on the steps of the Senedd earlier today when the group of 43 Members of the Senedd gathered together for the first time.

Likely First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said, “I know how many people are celebrating this momentous piece of Welsh history, this is history made by the people of Wales. It has been an honour to work on this campaign, but this campaign could only build on the work that has been done over a century of believing in our nation’s future.

“Plaid Cymru is ready to form the next government of Wales, and we are here as representatives of all of Wales, without question, every community

“We will do everything we can to repay the faith that people have put in us because we have a clear determination to make a difference on the things that matter to people’s lives, and that resonated with people in all corners of our country, on health, on a sustainable health and care sector, on raising standards in education, on creating jobs and opportunities in every part of Wales, the most generous childcare offer to help families with the cost of Living and standing up for Wales every single day.

“It is a new beginning, and I have no doubt that when we speak with a national voice that is as determined as we have seen in this election, no UK Government, no UK Prime Minister now or in the future can cast Wales aside or turn a blind eye to our needs and our aspirations as a nation.

“We will build this nation every single day, bringing the competence that is needed and the compassion that is needed, the hope that is needed, the belief in what we can be and the belief that our current situation is not as good as things can be for Wales, we will take those arguments forward on behalf of all the people of our nation, and we will represent everyone, whether or not they supported Plaid Cymru in this election.”

Later he added that a move to a First Minister vote could be as soon as the coming week, and he wanted to ‘hit the ground running’.

Specifically on what a government looks like he said, “I made it clear that my desire, if we were able to, would be to form a minority Plaid Cymru government. It’s clear now that we are in that position, but my determination to work according to that spirit of co operation is as clear now as it always has been, and we will reach out to others on legislation by legislation, on budget by budget, on idea by idea, so we can start making a difference to the lives of the people of Wales as quickly as we can.”

“I have made it clear that my desire has been to be able to form a minority government. It’s clear, I think, to everybody, that the election results makes that now possible. But I have always made it clear that I recognise and embrace, in fact, that there needs to be co-operation with people.”

“I have spoken to other party leaders, and I will endeavour in everything that I do to make sure that we build the stability that we need in order to move forward”
