Police warn of rise in mobile phone and courier scams

A warning has been issued amid a rise in EE and O2 contract scams and courier fraud targeting residents across the region.

Police say that scammers are targeting members of the public with calls, texts and emails claiming to represent either mobile network or another trusted organisation.

The fraudsters reportedly offer the victim a free gift, claim that their account has been compromised or that an expensive contract or upgrade has been taken out in their name.

They then claim that a courier will come to collect your phone, bank card or other items to “secure them”.

However, this is a scam. EE/O2, banks, police and other legitimate organisations will never ask you to hand over devices, bank cards, PINs or passwords.

They will also never send a courier to collect items from your home.

A North Wales Police spokesperson explained that scammers often create a sense of urgency to stop you from checking the story.

The force has issued the following advice to help members of the public to stay scam aware:

Do not share personal or banking details.

Hang up and contact the organisation directly using a trusted number.

Never hand items to a courier sent after an unexpected call.

Talk to friends, family and neighbours – especially elderly or vulnerable people.

If you believe you’ve been contacted or affected then contact Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online. If a scam is happening right now, call 999.

Check live fuel prices near you before you set off.
