Mark Tami MP has backed Labour’s new Veterans Strategy, which is set to benefit 4,393 veterans living in Alyn and Deeside.

The constituency has a higher rate of veterans at 5.3 per cent of the population aged 16 and over, compared with the Welsh average of 4.5 per cent and the UK average of 3.8 per cent.

The area with the highest proportion of veterans is Connah’s Quay South and Northop Hall, at 6.3 per cent.

As part of the new plan, the Labour Government will roll out veterans’ support centres across the country.

The new centres, which could be based on the high street or within community centres, aim to improve access to local services for former service personnel.

They will provide coordinated guidance in areas such as health, housing and employment, with additional support potentially offered in finance, wellbeing and social integration.

Mark Tami MP said: “Our Labour Government is determined to renew the nation’s contract with those who serve and have served.
“There are some fantastic community organisations already doing great work to support veterans in Alyn and Deeside. I’m proud that this Labour Government is backing them by stepping up support for our veterans with a new Veterans Strategy.”

“As part of this, I will be backing local bids to bring a veterans’ support centre to Alyn and Deeside.”

“This will transform government support for our heroes and recognise their invaluable contribution across the country.”

The announcement follows the Labour Government’s new Defence Housing Strategy, which outlines the largest renewal of military housing in more than 50 years.

Over 40,000 military homes will be upgraded nationwide, including 4,153 in Alyn and Deeside.

The VALOUR centres form a key part of the new Veterans Strategy, the first of its kind in seven years.

Developed alongside the Strategic Defence Review and the Armed Forces Covenant, the plan includes an additional £12 million for the Reducing Veteran Homelessness programme and extends Op FORTITUDE, which has already housed more than 1,000 veterans.

These programmes will provide three years of support for veterans at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

John Healey MP, Labour’s Defence Secretary, said: “The first duty of government is to keep our country safe, and that is only possible through the extraordinary men and women in our Armed Forces.”

“Our nation owes a duty to those who have served, and this new Strategy recognises veterans as one of our greatest assets.”

“Today’s announcements will boost local support for veterans across the UK, from better healthcare to housing to jobs. Labour’s message to veterans and the Armed Forces community is simple: we are on your side.”

VALOUR, launched earlier this year with £50 million in total funding, aims to strengthen collaboration between veteran charities and government services, ensuring data-driven support and a single point of contact for veterans’ needs. VALOUR-recognised support centres are expected to open from spring 2026.
