Op Eyesight: Flint sees targeted road safety operation by North Wales Police

Police officers from the Roads Crime Unit conducted a road safety operation in Flint yesterday (Monday), focusing on driver eyesight and vehicle roadworthiness.
The operation, named Op Eyesight, took place at the Fire Station on Coast Road.
Drivers were required to read a clean, legal registration plate from 20 metres in daylight to meet the eyesight standard for safe driving.
All 79 drivers stopped passed the eyesight test.
Most were able to continue their journeys within minutes.
Despite the positive eyesight results, officers issued several Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for offences including: 13 for driving without a seatbelt, four for using a mobile phone while driving, two for no MOT, one for a defective tyre with exposed cord, four for driving without insurance, two for number plate offences, and three for insecure loads.
Additionally, three stop searches were conducted, and two PG9 Prohibition Notices were issued, restricting vehicles from public roads due to safety concerns.
One driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for cannabis at the roadside. He was later released pending further investigation and additional tests.
Two electric scooters were seized during the operation. North Wales Police reminded the public that privately owned e-scooters are illegal on public roads, pavements, and cycle paths in the area, as no government-approved rental trials currently operate in north Wales.
Sergeant Duncan Logan of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Good eyesight is essential for safe driving, and we make no apologies in trying to reduce serious and fatal collisions in line with road safety initiatives such as this one held yesterday.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and every single day we act against those responsible for illegal driving.
“Further operations will be carried out over the upcoming months as we are committed to making the roads of north Wales as safe as possible. If this operation prevented one person from being injured or worse, killed – then we see it as a success.”
Members of the public with concerns about road safety in their area are advised to contact North Wales Police.
