North Wales Police launch festive crackdown on drink and drug drivers

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

North Wales Police have launched their annual festive campaign to combat drink and drug driving.

The #OpLimit initiative, which began on Sunday, 1 December, aims to reduce road casualties by targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs throughout December.

Led by the Roads Crime Unit, the campaign will see officers working around the clock using intelligence-led tactics to identify and stop offenders.

The initiative also includes a comprehensive awareness drive, featuring social media outreach, digital advertisements, and posters in key locations such as shopping centres, schools, and pubs.

A core part of the campaign’s message is the devastating impact of impaired driving. “Having to knock on a door and tell someone their loved one has been killed because a driver made the selfish decision to get behind the wheel whilst under the influence is the worst part of our job,” said Sergeant Emma Birrell of the Roads Crime Unit.

Throughout 2023, North Wales Police made 888 drug drive arrests and 964 drink drive arrests.

Between January and October this year, 691 drink drive and 886 drug drive arrests were recorded, underlining the ongoing commitment to tackling the issue.

“Anyone caught faces a minimum 12-to-18-month disqualification,” Sergeant Birrell warned.

“The impact is enormous: you could lose your job, your home, or even your life. Worst still, you could take someone else’s. Drink or drug driving isn’t worth the risk.”

Police will be particularly vigilant during the festive season but emphasised that enforcement continues year-round.

In last year’s campaign, 79 drivers were arrested for drink-driving and 90 for drug-driving between December 1, 2023, and January 1, 2024.

The public is encouraged to follow the campaign via the hashtags #OpLimit and #Fatal5, and to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 101 or 999 in emergencies.

Anonymous reports can also be made through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

“Please help us keep roads safe,” Sergeant Birrell urged. “Even a small amount of drugs or alcohol can impair your ability to drive. Don’t let your actions ruin lives this Christmas.”
