North Wales Medical School officially launched to address doctor shortages

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

The Welsh Government has officially opened the North Wales Medical School, a transformative initiative aimed at addressing doctor shortages and improving healthcare delivery in the region.

First Minister Eluned Morgan and Health Secretary Jeremy Miles led the opening ceremony at Bangor University, where 80 students have already begun their studies this semester.

The North Wales Medical School, a collaboration between Bangor University, Cardiff University, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and the Welsh Government, marks the culmination of five years of planning.

From 2029-30, the school aims to take in 140 students annually, up from the current intake of 80, to train the next generation of doctors entirely within North Wales.

First Minister Eluned Morgan hailed the new school as a “game-changer” for recruiting medical professionals in Wales. “Recruiting skilled doctors is a major challenge across the UK and Europe.

The medical school will enable more students to train in the region, which is great news for our NHS, particularly in North Wales,” she said.

Health Secretary Jeremy Miles emphasised the school’s role in providing care closer to people’s homes.

“This school reinforces our commitment to healthcare across Wales, ensuring students benefit from world-class training and support from NHS Wales.”

Bangor University Vice-Chancellor Professor Edmund Burke highlighted the significance of the school for the university and the region, adding, “The North Wales Medical School reflects our dedication to education and research, while addressing local healthcare needs.”

Chair of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Dyfed Edwards, also praised the initiative, stating that the school will help retain doctors in the region.

“Doctors often practice close to where they train, so the aim is to encourage lifelong careers within North Wales, benefiting local communities.”

The school is expected to play a pivotal role in research, innovation, and healthcare delivery, strengthening the Welsh NHS for future generations.
