NEWSAR: Search and rescue team celebrates 45 years of life-saving service in North East Wales
This week marks a significant milestone for the North East Wales Search and Rescue team (NEWSAR), as it celebrates 45 years of dedicated service to communities across North East Wales.
The volunteer-led organisation, originally founded in 1979 as the Clwyd Rescue Team, has become a vital part of local emergency response efforts, assisting police and ambulance services in Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham, and parts of Conwy and Powys.
In 1994, the team officially adopted the name NEWSAR.
Over the years, NEWSAR has saved countless lives, responding to an average of 80 callouts annually.
From searching for missing vulnerable people to performing rescues in mountainous or suburban areas, the team operates around the clock, 365 days a year.
A spokesperson for NEWSAR expressed gratitude to all volunteers past and present, saying:
“A huge thank you to every volunteer for your selfless service and unwavering commitment. Your efforts make NEWSAR the strong, resilient team it is today.”
The charity, which relies entirely on donations and grants to cover its £30,000 annual operating costs, does not charge for its services.
Expenses include maintaining vehicles, training, and purchasing equipment like ropes and stretchers.
NEWSAR is also part of the wider Mountain Rescue network in England and Wales, often assisting teams in other areas such as Cheshire and Shropshire.
What began as a small group of volunteers in 1979 has grown into a highly trained organisation affiliated with the North Wales Mountain Rescue Association.
While traditional mountain rescues remain part of their work, the team is often called to assist in searches for missing persons, particularly those suffering from illness or in vulnerable situations.
Residents are reminded that NEWSAR is available 24/7 and can only be activated through police or ambulance services following a 999 call.
