National Dance Company Wales to tour new show Surge | Gwefr

National Dance Company Wales (NDCWales) will tour a new programme called Surge | Gwefr from September to November 2025, featuring three unique dance works by choreographers Marcos Morau, Osian Meilir, and Faye Tan in collaboration with Cecile Johnson Soliz.
The programme combines a well-loved NDCWales piece with two new works by Welsh and Wales-based artists. Marcos Morau’s Waltz, which was widely praised during the Pulse tour in 2023, returns following acclaim across Europe for its precise choreography and striking costumes.
Marcos Morau, known internationally for creating surreal visual landscapes, previously worked with NDCWales on Tundra in 2017.
David Wilson, Interim Executive Director and Joint CEO of NDCWales, said: “Marcos Morau’s movement style is mesmerising to watch. His work is really hypnotic and Waltz is a huge fan-favourite, so we’re delighted to see the return of this dramatic, compelling and exciting work this autumn alongside two equally vibrant works by Wales based creators Faye Tan and Osian Meilir who have both collaborated with visual artists, designers and musicians to create distinct dance experiences that will showcase the skilful talents of the company.”
Faye Tan’s Infinity Duet, created with artist Cecile Johnson Soliz and music by Cardiff sound artist Richard McReynolds, debuted in early 2025. The piece blends dance and sculpture equally, featuring two dancers alongside a swinging sculpture made by Johnson Soliz, whose drawings also appear on the costumes.
Tan explained: “Cecile and I have created a piece where neither dance nor sculpture take priority, with both art forms given equal importance and agency in the making of the work. Within the work, audiences can simultaneously experience the feelings that come with watching dance and viewing sculpture.”
The third piece, Mabon, is a new work by Welsh choreographer Osian Meilir inspired by Welsh myth and the Mabinogion stories. The piece incorporates folk and contemporary dance and features eco-friendly animal costumes by Welsh designer Becky Davies. The music is a new score by triple harpist Cerys Hafana.
Meilir said: “I’m thrilled to be sharing Mabon with audiences across Wales and beyond. I hope people will feel enchanted by this Welsh folklore and find an eagerness to know more about our rich culture, stories and language.”
Surge | Gwefr will tour venues including Cardiff, Newport, Bangor, Mold, Aberystwyth, London, and Ipswich. The tour includes Audio Description at all performances and BSL interpretation at shows in Cardiff on 17 September and London on 17 October. The tour is supported by Colwinston, Arts Council Wales, Welsh Government, and the Foyle Foundation supports Mabon.
