Musical Tick, Tick…BOOM! to open Theatr Clwyd after huge redevelopment

Theatr Clwyd’s highly anticipated reopening in 2025 promises an electrifying new chapter for the iconic Flintshire venue, beginning with a production of Jonathan Larson’s acclaimed musical tick, tick…BOOM!
The announcement, made by Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg, marks a significant moment for the theatre, which has undergone a major redevelopment.
“This is a watershed moment for Theatr Clwyd,” said Wasserberg. “I’m delighted to open this state-of-the-art building with a season that showcases the extraordinary wealth and diversity of talent to be found in Wales.”
Wasserberg, who recently directed Boys from the Blackstuff in London’s West End, will helm the opening musical. tick, tick…BOOM! (running 2 June – 28 June) is a semi-autobiographical work by Jonathan Larson, creator of the cult classic RENT, exploring the struggles and dreams of a young artist on the verge of success.
The season reflects a dynamic mix of theatre, including On Wednesdays We Wear Pink, a production created by young people from Theatr Clwyd, and Alan Ayckbourn’s darkly comic thriller Snake in the Grass (15 Sep – 4 Oct). The season also celebrates Welsh culture, with The Red Rogue of Bala, a fast-paced drama by Welsh playwright Chris Ashworth-Bennion, set to premiere in November. This piece brings the story of Coch Bach y Bala, a notorious poacher and jailbreaker, to the stage.
Theatr Clwyd’s commitment to Welsh talent will continue with collaborations such as their partnership with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, Wales’ National Welsh language theatre company. Four new plays reflecting the North Wales experience will be performed in Welsh at the 2025 National Eisteddfod in Wrexham.
As part of its long-term vision, Theatr Clwyd has also announced projects for 2026, including a new production of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, focused on improving representation for Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent performers.
The theatre’s redevelopment is one of Wales’ most culturally significant projects, designed to enhance audience experience and support world-class theatre making within a more sustainable and efficient building. These upgrades aim to solidify Theatr Clwyd as a hub of cultural engagement for the region.
Booking for the 2025 season opens to the public on 11 November, with priority access for Theatr Clwyd members from 28 October. Tickets and further details can be found on Theatr Clwyd’s website.
