Motorists in Flintshire are being urged to security mark the catalytic converter (CAT) on their vehicles to deter thieves who steal them for scrap.

Operation Tornado is a police backed campaign encouraging motorists to spend about £5 on the measure and avoid the expense and inconvenience of replacing a stolen catalytic converter.

PC David Allmark said;

“A unique ID number is acid etched into the metal so they only way it could be removed would be by grinding off the number.

“Any CAT recovered from a scrap metal dealer with such grinding marks could be seized as suspected stolen item.  Included in the kit is a security sticker for the vehicle window to warn would be thieves.”
