Mold Market burger stall owner gives back after homelessness

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

A little over a year ago, Richard was living in a tent, uncertain about what the future would hold.

Today, he is the founder of The Mad Moo burger stall, which can be found at Mold Market—a business that not only supports his recovery from homelessness but also gives back to the community that helped him rebuild his life.

Richard’s journey into homelessness began when he lost his home and moved into a tent on a campsite.

During that time, he turned to the social media platform TikTok, where he shared his experiences and connected with a supportive online community.

“When you’re going through something like that, it can feel very isolating,” Richard said. “The kindness and support I received online made a huge difference.”

Inspired by the encouragement, Richard launched The Mad Moo burger stall, operating in Wrexham’s Queen’s Square Market every Monday and at Mold Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Alongside selling burgers, Richard introduced a “Pay It Forward” scheme, allowing customers to purchase meals for those struggling to afford food.

In just three months, the scheme has provided over 150 free meals, no questions asked.

“It’s not just about helping those who are visibly struggling,” Richard explained. “It’s about creating a safety net for anyone who needs it—students, families, or even someone having a really bad day. Everyone deserves a good meal.”

The Mad Moo is now reaching out to local organisations that support the homeless and those who rely on food banks to help distribute vouchers for free meals.

“We want to make sure these burgers get to the people who need them most,” Richard said.

The scheme is also backed by Richard’s growing TikTok following, which has surpassed 26,000 users.

“We’ve even had people send us gifts during live streams to support the Pay It Forward scheme,” he said.

Looking ahead, Richard has ambitious plans for The Mad Moo, aiming to provide over 1,000 free meals through the scheme this year.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We’re committed to building a stronger community, one burger at a time.”

  • The Mad Moo can be found at Queen’s Square Market in Wrexham every Monday from 8am to 3pm and in Mold on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.
