German discount supermarket chain Lidl has released an updated list of priority locations for building new stores, which includes two locations in Flintshire.

Plans are already in place to build a new Lidl supermarket on the site of the former Somerfield store in Connah’s Quay, however building work is yet to start.

In March, Lidl told Deeside.com it was “continuing to work through some complexities with the Council relating to the car park” prior to any demotion work starting.

Once built the Connah’s Quay store will replace their Supermarket in Queensferry.

The updated list published today shows Lidl is still looking for new sites Flint and Broughton, two locations the company has previously earmarked for new stores.

Lidl’s success has continued into 2023, with sales rising by nearly 26%, according to data from Kantar.

The company has responded to this growth by opening over 50 new stores in 2022 and an additional 15 in the first quarter of 2023 alone.

The CEO of Lidl GB, Ryan McDonnell, expressed his commitment to providing every household with access to a Lidl store.

“We’re more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store.”

“That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.”

Lidl’s Chief Development Officer, Richard Taylor, added that the company’s store expansion has been unparalleled.

“Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. What’s important is that we take a strategic and sustainable approach to getting there.”
