Jack Sargeant loses Senedd seat after eight years representing Alyn and Deeside
Jack Sargeant has lost his Senedd seat after eight years representing Alyn and Deeside.
The Welsh Labour Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership stood as second on his party’s list in the new Fflint Wrecsam constituency at Thursday’s Senedd election.
Only one Labour candidate, Ken Skates, took a seat in the six-member constituency, with Reform UK topping the poll on 25,349 votes and Plaid Cymru second on 18,440.
In a post on Facebook today, he said: “It’s an honour to have represented my home community of Alyn and Deeside over the last 8 years.”
“I wish those representing Fflint Wrecsam well for the future, especially my good friend Ken Skates MS.”
He added: “From entering the Senedd during the most difficult time of my life, to serving in the Welsh Government Cabinet as Cymru’s youngest Minister and being the first Minister with an engineering apprenticeship to have responsibility for skills policy and budget, I’m proud of what I achieved during my time in the Senedd.”
Mr Sargeant thanked his staff in the same post.
He said: “My thanks to my hard-working and loyal team who have gone above and beyond everyday.”
He added: “I’m now going to spend some time with my young family who have sacrificed so much in order for me to serve.”
“I’ll be using the time to recharge and reflect on the next chapter.”
The Fflint Wrecsam constituency was created under the new Senedd election rules, which use larger constituencies each returning six members through proportional representation.
Reform UK secured two seats in the constituency, with Cristiana Emsley and Nigel Williams elected.
Plaid Cymru also took two seats, with Carrie Harper and Marc Jones returned.
The Welsh Conservatives won one seat, taken by Sam Rowlands.
Welsh Labour’s single seat went to Mr Skates, who has since been appointed interim leader of Welsh Labour following the resignation of First Minister Eluned Morgan, who lost her own seat in Ceredigion Penfro.
