Invictus Games: Jack Sargeant MS honours veterans at Senedd event

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Alyn and Deeside MS Jack Sargeant led an event at the Senedd last week to honour organisations that support veterans and to pay tribute to members of the UK Invictus Games squad.

Representatives from the Royal British Legion, Fighting With Pride, and the Invictus Games team joined Mr Sargeant to celebrate the vital role these groups play in supporting the Armed Forces community.

Speaking at the event, Mr Sargeant, who also addressed attendees on behalf of the Welsh Government, thanked the organisations for their work and wished the competitors success ahead of this year’s Invictus Games in Canada.

The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured, and sick armed service personnel and veterans.

The games focus on recovery and rehabilitation through sport and aim to foster greater understanding and respect for service members.

The word “Invictus” means “unconquered” in Latin, reflecting the resilience and determination of participants.

“As Minister responsible for community and elite sport, I will continue to champion the value of sport and exercise,” Mr Sargeant said.

“Our veterans, like everyone, must be able to access the opportunities they provide. Events like Invictus help us all shape the narrative relating to our Armed Forces community, showcasing incredible achievements and individuals who possess amazing skills and attitudes that are of such value to our communities.”

Mr Sargeant also had the opportunity to hear directly from competitors about their journeys to the games, many of whom highlighted the role of sport in their recovery and personal growth.

After the event, he added: “We owe our veterans and service personnel a huge debt of gratitude. I want to pay tribute to all those organisations, their staff, and volunteers who work with veterans and serving personnel. I was proud to be able to address members of the Invictus team and wish them good luck for the games in Canada.”

The event highlighted the significance of the Invictus Games and the ongoing efforts of organisations supporting veterans in Wales and beyond.
