I’m a Celeb’s Gwrych Castle offers sneak peek at new roof plans
Custodians of a North Wales castle which played host to the “I’m a Celebrity” TV series have offered a sneak peek at plans for its new roof.
Gwrych Castle, near Abergele in Conwy, gained widespread attention after it became the home of the ITV show when filming in Australia was ruled out due to the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
Members of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust have long been fundraising to improve the Grade I-listed building after it fell into a state of disrepair.
A total of £2.2m was recently awarded from the National Heritage Memorial Fund to enable the trust to undertake urgent repairs, including by adding a permanent roof and flooring.
The trust has now released an artist’s impression of how the new roof could look.
In a post on Facebook, it said: “It’s been 30 years in the making but we’re very excited to share the first view of the proposed new roof created by the talented team at Chambers Conservation, who we will be working with along the way to make this dream a reality.
“The work has been made possible thanks to the recent grant awarded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund. We have a long way to go but we will share more updates with you as soon as we can!”
Although I’m A Celeb has returned to filming in Australia, trustees of the castle previously said the door was still open for a possible return for the hit show.
They said it had an “ongoing relationship” with ITV and mentioned “possible projects on the horizon”.
In June this year, permission was granted for the castle to host wedding and birthday events after being granted an entertainment and alcohol licence.
Further news on the roof plans is expected at a later date.
