Foster Care Fortnight launches in Flintshire on Monday, with Flintshire County Council and Foster Wales urging more local families to consider becoming foster carers.

The two-week campaign runs from 11 to 24 May, under this year’s theme, “This is Fostering”.

Among those backing the campaign in Flintshire is Tom, a care-experienced foster carer who now provides short-term placements alongside his young family.

Tom grew up in foster care and went on to become a lecturer.

He said staying in the same school during his time in care helped him stay on track.

Tom said: “I’m a huge advocate that being in foster care shouldn’t hold young people back.”

“It never stopped me from achieving my goals.”

He added: “Staying local made a massive difference.”

“It gave me stability and helped me move forward.”

Tom said fostering was now his way of giving back.

He said: “We’ve found a way to make it work with our busy lives.”

“It’s incredibly rewarding to give young people a sense of belonging and the chance to reach their potential.”

Sarah Grant, Senior Manager of Children’s Services at Flintshire County Council, said: “We are extremely proud of foster carers like Tom and their families.”

“Fostering is about so much more than providing a safe place to stay.”

“It’s about creating a sense of belonging and building strong, supportive relationships that help children and young people thrive.”

A national survey commissioned by Foster Wales found around 80% of foster carers questioned had supported children showing behaviours linked to early trauma, with about half reporting a meaningful breakthrough within the first six months.

According to Foster Wales, there are 7,200 children in care across Wales, with 4,884 living with foster families supported by 3,538 approved foster carers.
