Flintshire residents warned about new Winter Fuel Payment scam

Flintshire County Council Trading Standards Service has issued a warning about a new Winter Fuel Payment scam targeting residents.
The scam involves fraudulent text messages claiming recipients are eligible for the payment and directing them to click on a link.
How the Scam Works
The scam messages often include links such as “https://gov.winterpaymendu.top,” which are designed to appear legitimate by incorporating “.gov” into the address.
Once clicked, these links aim to steal personal information, including credit or debit card details. This information is not required to receive Winter Fuel Payments.
A council spokesperson said: “The first thing to be aware of is that, to be eligible to receive the payment, you need to be born before 23rd September 1958.”
“Secondly, even if you are eligible, the Department of Work and Pensions will write to you telling you how much you will receive. They will not text you.”
Scammers may also attempt to contact potential victims through social media platforms.
If you are unsure about your eligibility or need more information about Winter Fuel Payments, visit the official government page at https://orlo.uk/ewiyG.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal details.
