A historic Flintshire paper mill has found an innovative way to emphasise workplace safety by enlisting the help of its workers’ children.

Oakenholt mill, owned by global hygiene and health company Essity, has released a heartwarming video featuring young stars reinforcing health and safety protocols.

The children, some of whom are grandchildren of mill employees, demonstrate essential practices like removing jewellery, wearing protective gear, and responding to a fire alarm drill.

One notable moment in the video includes a young girl using British Sign Language, ensuring the message is inclusive and accessible to all.

Operating since 1875, the Oakenholt mill manufactures popular products such as Cushelle Quilted Velvet and private-label items for the NHS and major supermarkets. Despite its modern operations, safety remains a timeless priority.

“Health and safety rules are critical in our line of work,” explained Lee Jones, mill manager at Essity Oakenholt.

“While everyone is trained to have a deep understanding of the site requirements, we never want complacency to creep in particularly when we have external visitors who might not be familiar with this type of environment.”

“Our employees are mothers, fathers and grandparents, and their safety is paramount – especially to the stars of our video. The message has resonated deeply across the team and has been a brilliant way to reiterate the importance of ensuring everybody understands the rules before stepping on site.”

The initiative was spearheaded by site operations manager Clive Riley, whose granddaughter Felicity appears in the opening scene removing her jewellery.

Clive described the campaign as a morale booster, he said:

“Not only has the video done a fantastic job of driving home our key health and safety messages, but it has also been great for site morale and strengthening our sense of community. The children were so enthusiastic while filming and it was brilliant to have them on site – one little actor in particular!”

The video has received positive feedback from employees and visitors, many noting how the involvement of children has made safety guidelines more relatable and memorable.
