Young people in Flintshire are set to enjoy a wide range of sporting activities this summer following funding announced by North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Andy Dunbobbin.

The PCC has revealed 18 successful winners of the 2025 Summer Sports Fund, which provides a total of £25,000 to support youth-focused sports projects across North Wales during the school holidays. The fund aims to prevent antisocial behaviour by encouraging safe, inclusive, and structured activities for young people while they are out of school.

Several Flintshire organisations have secured grants to run sessions throughout the summer break, including Deeside Community Trust, Deeside Dragons Junior Ice Hockey Club, Sealand Spartans FC, CPD y Parlwr DU, Gwella, and Farm Fit Club.

The sports funded cover a broad spectrum of activities such as football, rugby, netball, ice hockey, outdoor learning, and youth-led wellbeing sessions, providing opportunities for young people to stay active, build skills, and connect with their community.

Andy Dunbobbin said: “I’m delighted to support such a broad mix of clubs and organisations through this year’s Summer Sports Fund. Their commitment to young people and to local communities was clear in every application.

“My role as Commissioner is not only to support policing, but also to invest in long-term community safety and that means helping young people stay active, connected, and supported. With the school holidays underway, it’s the perfect time to channel their energy into something fun, structured, and meaningful.”

The fund is part of a wider approach to tackling antisocial behaviour, which often rises during the summer months when young people have more free time and less supervision.

The grant recipients will deliver positive sporting activities to help young people build confidence, improve wellbeing, and enjoy safe social environments.

Gaynor McKeown, Chief Executive of DASU North Wales, one of the funded organisations, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to receive this funding from the Summer Sports Fund. It means we can offer children and young people affected by domestic abuse a safe space to have fun, build confidence, and simply enjoy being kids again.

“Many of the families we support face real barriers to accessing activities over the summer, and this grant allows us to provide positive, structured experiences that can make a lasting difference. We’re proud to be part of a programme that puts young people’s wellbeing at its heart.”

The Summer Sports Fund is part of the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s wider Police and Crime Plan, which prioritises supporting communities and investing in initiatives that promote safety and wellbeing.
