More than 400 attend opening day of free Flintshire summer programme

More than 400 children and family members attended the opening day of Fit, Fed and Read, as the free summer programme returned to Flintshire.
Launch sessions took place in Flint and Sealand, offering families an afternoon of free activities, food and reading.
The programme is delivered by Gwella in partnership with Flintshire County Council’s Community Development Team, Flintshire Town Councils, Actif North Wales and Farrall’s Group.
Sessions include sports, games, creative activities and inflatables, along with access to books through Gwella’s mobile library service and free refreshments.
No booking is required, families can simply turn up and take part.
Gwella says last summer’s programme welcomed more than 5,300 children, young people and family members across 45 sessions, provided 3,520 meals and handed out 800 Summer Reading Challenge packs.
The programme was shortlisted for Best Social Impact Initiative at the Welsh Sports Association Sports Industry Awards 2026.
Michelle Vaughan Thomas, Active Communities Manager at Gwella Sport Development, said:
“It’s been fantastic to see so many children and families enjoying Fit, Fed and Read again this summer.
“The programme is about much more than activities. It gives children the opportunity to be active, enjoy reading, meet new people and build confidence, while providing families with free opportunities to spend quality time together during the holidays.
“We’d like to thank everyone who has attended so far, along with our partners and volunteers who continue to make the programme possible. There are still plenty of sessions to come, and we’d encourage anyone who hasn’t yet visited to come along and join us.”
Sessions continue at venues across Flintshire until 21 August.
Full dates, locations and session information are available on the Gwella website.
