New aircraft hangar approved at Hawarden Airport’s Aviation Park
A new aircraft hangar has been approved at Hawarden Airport to house a client’s private jet.
Flintshire County Council granted permission for Aviation Park Group Ltd to partly demolish Hangar 12 at the Business Aviation Centre, off Flint Road in Saltney Ferry, and build a larger replacement in its place.
The new hangar will measure 40 metres by 40 metres and stand 13.6 metres tall at the ridge, clad in dove grey aluminium with blue trims to match the surrounding buildings.
The application, made by Colin Butt of Aviation Park Group Ltd, said the hangar is needed to accommodate a client’s aircraft which must meet certain size criteria.
The floor plan submitted with the application shows a Gulfstream G500, a long range business jet, inside the building.
Checks for possible contamination in the ground must be carried out before any work starts.
Natural Resources Wales told the council the site’s previous use means historic contamination may be present, including PFAS, sometimes called forever chemicals, along with hydrocarbons and oils.
The site sits above a principal aquifer, a layer of rock holding groundwater, and is around 200 metres from a ditch that flows directly into the River Dee.
Conditions attached to the permission require a full investigation of the ground, and a clean-up plan if one is needed, before construction begins.
The site is on the Dee Estuary flood plain, and a flood assessment submitted with the application found the replacement building would not push flood water elsewhere or change the way it flows.
Airbus, which assesses development near the aerodrome for flight safety, raised no objection.
No objections were received from neighbours, and Broughton and Bretton Community Council and local ward councillor Billy Mullin did not respond to the consultation.
The permission was granted under delegated powers, meaning the decision was made by planning officers rather than the council’s planning committee.
Work must start within five years.
