The first ballot box has arrived at Plas Coch in Wrexham as the polls close in the 2026 Senedd election.

Polling stations across Wales closed at 10pm on Thursday, May 7 and in the Fflint Wrecsam constituency the first sealed ballot box has now been delivered to the Plas Coch Sports Centre at Wrexham University.

Ballot boxes from across Flintshire and Wrexham will be delivered through the night and securely stored before counting begins at 8am on Friday, May 8.

This is the first time that Wales has gone to the polls under the new proportional representation system. It will elect more Members of the Senedd than ever before – 96 – and the number of candidates elected from each party will be based on the percentage of votes their party receives.

There will be a number of rounds in each six-seat constituency whereby the party with the highest proportion of the vote is awarded seats – which are then allocated in the priority order they submitted their candidates,

Their vote share is then halved and whichever party has the highest vote share in round two will get the next allocation of seats. The process continues until all six seats are taken.

Once all constituencies have declared, if there is one party with a clear majority they will form the next Senedd. If not, it may take days of negotiations to form a coalition government.

Fflint Wrecsam is predicted to declare its result by 5.30pm tomorrow, while Clwyd, which also covers part of Flintshire and Wrexham, is expecting to declare at 3pm and Gwynedd Maldwyn, which also includes parts of Wrexham, is anticipating a 3.30pm result.
