Ewloe Sports and Social Club saves day for Flintshire Morris Dancing troupe

Ewloe Sports and Social Club came to the rescue for the Bagillt and Flint Morris Dancing troupe, who found themselves without a venue for their event just days before it was set to take place.
The young dancers from across North Wales were due to compete in the competition last Sunday, which also featured visiting troupes from Llandudno, Blaenau, Wrexham, and Penryn.
On the preceding Thursday managing committee of the Ewloe Sports and Social Club quickly made arrangements to ensure the event could still take place.
The club’s car park was manned from 7:30 am on the day and a safe practice area was created for the young dancers before they took to the main concert room.
The day was a huge success, with everyone enjoying the wonderful competition.
The Ewloe Sports and Social Club has been at the heart of the local community since 1938 and shares the same community-based spirit as all the competing dance troupes.
Despite the financial pressures of the COVID-19 lockdowns, the club has survived and is now used as a community vacation centre by the local NHS Wales health board.
Other community groups, such as the Butterfly stroke club, have also been regular guests at the club.
In addition, Flintshire County Council has future bookings for an autism event with up to 17 companies using the club’s facilities to support the local community.
The club is also restarting its live entertainment programme with regular monthly tribute acts performing on the main stage.
A managing committee spokesperson said: “Over the coming King’s coronation weekend, there will be an award-winning Bee Gees act called Stayin’ Alive on May 5th.
“A sporting competition in the games room where the winner will be crowned the King of the Club, and an extra special bingo night on May 7th, in place of the club’s normal weekly well-attended bingo.”
“This allows the club’s greatest asset, its senior members, to come together in a social gathering.”
Ewloe Sports and Social Club has been at the centre of village life for both Ewloe, Hawarden and the surrounding area since 1938.
The managing committee said it is “confident that the club will continue to thrive into the future by continuing the ethos of social integration and, most importantly, being the heart of the community.”
