Education Secretary Kirsty Williams has approved £4.125 million for a new industry standard technology centre at Coleg Cambria.

Welsh Government match funding has been awarded to the College for the project which will cost £8.25 million in total.

As well as to refurbish existing buildings, the money will be used to build a new, two storey technology building on the College’s existing Bersham Road Campus.

The new building will provide an improved industry standard learning facility for construction, engineering, motor vehicle and manufacturing and provision.

The new build area, due to be competed by September 2017, will accommodate over 500 learners, with another 500 plus learners accessing the refurbished facilities.

Funding has been allocated as part of the 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, a unique collaboration between the Welsh Government, the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and local authorities with the aim of creating a generation of 21st education infrastructure in Wales.

The programme focuses resources on the right schools in the right places, for early years through to post-16.

Kirsty Williams said:

“The building will provide new state of the art facilities to enhance the College’s curriculum offer for meeting the current learner and employer needs.

“The demand for something new and different in post-16 provision is not just about raising levels of achievement and skills; it is about driving the wider Welsh economy which depends on these things.”
