Ecosystems lecture launches 2017/18 series of events at Wrexham Glyndwr University

Resilience in ecosystems, contemporary art and the future of Faith in Wales lead a diverse line-up of topics for a new lecture series.

Wrexham Glyndwr University’s latest Public Lecture Series starts this autumn featuring talks by internationally-renowned academics.

David Skydmore’s Inaugural Professorial Lecture on Wednesday 11 October will be the first to kick off the series of events at the university.

Professor Skydmore is Chair of Rural Policy at the university’s School of Social and Life Sciences and academic lead at its Northop campus.

His talk – titled The Coils of the Spring: Resilience and Inspirations from Ecosystems – will explore the complex nature of ecosystems and how the growth and form of trees provide messages about how human systems can be managed.

The lecture will draw upon Professor Skydmore’s 30 plus years of experience in horticulture, wildlife and plant biology, using examples from facilities at Wrexham Glyndwr University’s Northop campus.

Here, an organic market garden hosts community growing plots, a sustainable woodland is being restored to its deciduous state and meadows are being managed for diversity to provide research and experimental areas for students.

The Coils of the Spring: Resilience and Inspirations from Ecosystems by Professor David Skydmore takes places at the Nick Whitehead Theatre, Wrexham Glyndwr University, on Wednesday 11 October at 6pm.

The free event is supported by the Royal Society of Biology as part of Biology Week 2017. There will be a welcome drinks reception from 5.30pm and an opportunity for questions and answers at the end of the lecture.

Also confirmed for the 2017-18 Public Lecture Series are talks by Professor Alec Shepley on Wednesday 15 November and a look at the Future of Faith in Wales on Tuesday 21 November with Professor Wayne Morris.

All talks are free to attend and open to all.
