Driver spared jail after Christmas Eve smash on ‘Kinnerton Bumps’ left three injured

A 19-year-old driver has been given a suspended sentence after a Christmas Eve collision on a road near Pen-y-ffordd left three of his passengers seriously injured.
Harley Ryan was 18 at the time of the incident on 24 December 2024.
He was driving along Kinnerton Road, known locally as the ‘Kinnerton Bumps’, from Pen-y-ffordd towards Higher Kinnerton with three passengers in the car.
North Wales Police said Ryan was driving at excess speed over a prolonged distance when he lost control.
The car swerved off the carriageway, entered a ditch, overturned, and came to rest further down the road on its roof in another ditch.
All three passengers sustained serious injuries.
At court yesterday, Ryan was handed a two-year suspended sentence, banned from driving for two years, and made subject to a curfew enforced by electronic tag between 7pm and 7am for three months.
Detective Inspector Timothy Evans, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “It was miraculous that we were not dealing with the deaths of 4 young people on Christmas Eve 2024.”
DI Evans thanked officers from the Road Crime Unit and all emergency services for their response, along with DC Donna Vernon and Forensic Collision Investigator Dave Hodges, who pieced together the circumstances of the collision.
He added: “The risks posed by young and inexperienced drivers to themselves, passengers, and other road users concerns me, and this case highlights the personal accountability of an individual’s actions behind the wheel.”
DI Evans said peer pressure over whether to accept lifts could create difficulties within friendship groups, and encouraged families to have open discussions about the risks.
