Police are urging Deeside residents to be on their guard following three distraction burglaries over the weekend.

Thieves targeted elderly residents in Queensferry, Pentre and Connah’s Quay, claiming to be either from the council or the Gas Board.

The men, who were described as having Irish accents managed to gain entry into three addresses and stole property.

The thieves called at a number of addresses in Belvedere Close in Queensferry on Saturday afternoon claiming to be from the local council and offering hedge cutting and gardening services

They also asked if residents had any unwanted electrical items to be taken away.

A man managed to gain entry to one home and stole a purse.

On Sunday 22nd September a man claiming to be a council gardener stole a purse from an address in Mechanics Lane, Pentre and a resident in Lime Close Connah’s Quay had cash taken by a man purporting to be from the Gas Board.

Inspector Ceri Hawe said;

“These are despicable offences targeting the most vulnerable in our communities.

“I would like to reiterate that under no circumstances should residents allow anyone entry into their homes unless they are 100% sure that they are legitimate.

“Workers from the council and any gas company will have proper identification, which you can check.

“Lines of investigation are being progressed and police patrols have been stepped up in these areas.

“We are working closely with Flintshire Trading Standards, the Neighbourhood Wardens and Neighbourhood Watch, but I would also ask neighbours to keep a close eye out for any suspicious callers in their area and to contact the police on 101.”

 Richard Powell, team leader for Flintshire Trading Standards Investigations said;

“Trading Standards advice is if you receive a call at your door from someone purporting to be from the council, British Gas or any public body, ask to see their ID card.

“Even if they are able to produce one ask them to wait outside while you make a phone call to confirm who they are. Genuine callers will not mind waiting for their identity to be confirmed.

“Do not let anyone into your home if they are unable to verify their identity. We would ask that residents stay alert and if you are suspicious of any traders in your area phone Trading Standards on 03454 040506 or North Wales Police on 101.”
