Convincing win for Airbus as they put 4 past Aberystwyth Town to remain unbeaten.

With TNS having played and won the day before, the Wingmakers were looking to regain top spot and keep their unbeaten start to the season going – with this Sunday fixture against Aberystwyth Town at the Airfield.

Early Airbus pressure was nearly rewarded after five minutes when Lewis Short’s well-struck drive forced Aberystwyth goalkeeper Mike Lewis into a low save. At the other end Chris Venables went close as the visitors showed their own attacking intent.

Wyn Thomas picked up a yellow card for the away side on 10 minutes for a foul on Steve Jones. On quarter on an hour Stuart Fraser hooked a shot just wide from inside the area from an Aberystwyth set-piece. The visitors then took the lead when a lapse in defence left Geoff Kellaway with a clear run on goal, and he finished low past James Coates to put Aberystwyth 1-0 up.

The Wingmakers looked to hit back after going behind and on 25 minutes a cross from the left by Steve Jones was deflected just wide of the far post. A few minutes later Lewis Short shot narrowly over the bar as Airbus enjoyed a spell of pressure. However, the visitors still asked questions of the Airbus defence going forward and from set-pieces.

Airbus were back on level terms on 34 minutes when Steve Jones cross from the left was headed home at the far post from close-range by Chris Budrys. The equaliser was deserved for the Wingmakers reaction to going behind, and at 1-1 it was all still to play for.

Aberystwyth were forced into an early change on 42 minutes with goal-scorer Geoff Kellaway going off injured to be replaced with Craig Williams. Just before half-time Wingmakers skipper Ian Kearney glanced a header wide and it remained 1-1 at the interval.

On 50 minutes Ian Kearney headed the Wingmakers on front with a powerful header from a corner. Airbus had earned their 2-1 lead having pegged the visitors back since the break. Minutes later in an almost identical move Kearney nearly scored again but this time his header was held by Lewis.

Aberystwyth made their next change on the hour with Bari Morgan being replaced by Krzystzof Nalborski. They were also fortunate to survive a penalty appeal after Chris Venables appeared to handle in the area from Ryan Wade’s cross. Meanwhile Steve Jones was causing problems for the visitors defence – running at them and putting in testing crosses.

On 65 minutes the Wingmakers extended their lead to 3-1. Lewis Short crossed from the left, Chris Budrys nodded the ball down at the far-post – leaving a tap-in for Steve Jones from two- yards out. A few minutes later Nalborski went into the book for a foul on Short. Mike Pearson then went close with a header at the far-post before Ryan Wade rolled a shot narrowly wide when through on goal.

With quarter of an hour to go Mike Roddy burst through on goal and with a cool low finish put the Wingmakers 4-1 up and secure the points for Airbus. The score-line was slightly harsh on an Aberystwyth side who had shown plenty of attacking enterprise – and they then went close with a drive just off target from Venables.

The Wingmakers made a double substitution with 12 minutes to go as Phil Bolland and Steve Abbott replaced Mike Pearson and Chris Budrys respectively. Shortly after that Aberystwyth made their last change with Tom Shaw on in place of Peter Hoy.

The final Airbus change of the game saw Sam Hart given a run-out in place of James Owen for the last five minutes. Abbott and Steve Jones combined to nearly further the Wingmakers lead at the near-post, as the Airbus work-rate never dropped entering the closing stages.

There was a late yellow card for a trip by Ian Kearney but the resulting free-kick on the edge of the area was well defended by Airbus. That was the last action of the game as the Wingmakers regained top-spot following another convincing win, and kept the unbeaten start going.
