A brick planter on Ffordd Newydd in Connah’s Quay has been fully replanted thanks to a joint community effort led by Connah’s Quay Town Councillor Rachael Fenwick.

Cllr Fenwick said she first noticed the neglected planter while out litter picking in the spring.

After contacting Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene service, she was told that a local volunteer had previously maintained it but that it had become too overgrown to manage.

“I contacted the lady, Gill Wilcock, to offer assistance between us to get it sorted,” said Cllr Fenwick.

“I then got in touch with the council’s Biodiversity and Nature Project Management Team and, after quite a lot of paperwork, we finally received all the materials, plants and shrubs from Daleside Garden Centre to bring it back to life.”

The new planting includes a variety of colourful, insect-friendly species to support pollinators in the area.

Cllr Fenwick added: “On Wednesday morning, Harry, Sophie, local volunteer Gill and I rolled up our sleeves and got to work planting, and we’re so pleased with how it’s turned out.”

She thanked Sarah Slater, the council’s Biodiversity Officer, Harry and Sophie from the Nature Recovery Project Team, Adrianna from Streetscene, and Gillian, the local volunteer who helped prepare the site and will continue to care for it alongside others.

The project was funded through the Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature Fund. Cllr Fenwick said she is also working with the council’s biodiversity team to review wildflower areas along Mold Road and near the new Lidl store.

“I can’t wait to see the planter flourish over the coming months, especially next spring and summer,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who stopped to say hello or offered words of encouragement on the day.”
