A Coleg Cambria Deeside student has been named one of Wales’s top adult learners.

Maryam Avazzadeh has won the Outstanding Commitment to Study category at the Access to HE Learner of the Year awards, run by Welsh awarding body Agored Cymru.

She completed the Access to HE Health Care Diploma at Coleg Cambria Yale, a one-year course covering biology, psychology, sociology, maths and English, achieving distinctions in every subject.

The Access to HE Diploma is designed for adult learners aged 19 and over with few or no formal qualifications, and provides a route to university or higher-level careers.

Maryam is now studying a GCSE in science while waiting for a university place, with the aim of training as a dental hygienist.

She had lived in the UK for more than eight years before returning to education and said she had waited until she felt confident enough to take the step.

One of her proudest moments during the course, she said, was when her son told her how proud he was of her, something she described as “wonderful”.

Gemma Ible, Curriculum Director for Access and Foundation Learning at Coleg Cambria Deeside and Yale, said:

“When someone like Maryam walks through the door, you see straight away that the opportunity means everything to them. These courses exist for exactly that reason, to give adults who’ve had to put their ambitions on hold a real, structured path back into education. The fact that she’s now heading towards university, achieving distinctions along the way, is exactly the outcome we hope for.”

Wayne Young, Maryam’s tutor, said:

“She didn’t just pass, she achieved straight distinctions, which is a remarkable accomplishment. It wasn’t easy, but she embraced the challenge fully. She was constantly asking questions, always seeking to improve, and demonstrated incredible perseverance, especially studying in her second language.”

He said Maryam had also been a supportive and collaborative member of the class who had helped other students and contributed to a positive learning environment.

Coleg Cambria offers Access to HE courses for adult learners across its campuses in Deeside and Yale, Wrexham.
