Chester’s Northgate Arena set for multi-million pound upgrade

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Big changes are on the horizon for Chester’s Northgate Arena, thanks to a significant investment from Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The renovation work begins with the closure of both swimming pools on Monday, 23rd December 2024, followed by a partial closure of the building from Monday, 6th January 2025, through to Spring 2026.

During this time, the sports hall, reception, and a temporary studio space will remain operational, while a temporary gym and fitness class programme will keep users active and engaged.

To facilitate the transition, the sports hall and gym will close between 16th and 18th December 2024, allowing gym equipment to be relocated to a temporary space, which will open to the public on 19th December 2024.

Planned Upgrades

The revitalised arena promises a wealth of new features:

  • Modernised Pools: Enhanced with a sleek water slide and interactive play equipment. Improved accessibility, including pool pod lifts, is also planned.
  • Revamped Gym: State-of-the-art equipment and a refreshed design, complemented by upgraded lighting and air cooling.
  • Relaxation Zones: A new sauna and steam room will feature private changing areas for added comfort.
  • Inclusive Facilities: Updated changing areas will offer family-friendly and accessible spaces tailored to the needs of all visitors.
  • Improved Outdoor Spaces: Enhanced landscaping, accessibility features, and signage are designed to create a more welcoming environment.
  • Sustainability in Focus: Energy-saving initiatives such as LED lighting and upgraded pool filtration systems aim to reduce the arena’s environmental impact.

Temporary Adjustments for Members

Work begins on December 23, 2024, with pool closures followed by partial building closures from January 6, 2025. A temporary gym and fitness programme will be available, alongside access to pools at other Brio Leisure centres. Discounted memberships will be offered during the closure period.

Community-Centered Design

Matthew Parker, Managing Director of Brio Leisure, highlighted the role of community input in shaping the project:

“This project wouldn’t be possible without the generous investment from Cheshire West and Chester Council, and we are deeply grateful. Your feedback has been invaluable in ensuring the new facilities meet our community’s needs. We can’t wait to welcome you back in 2026!”

Cllr Adam Langan, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, praised the investment, calling it a vital part of Chester’s One City Plan:

“Having access to good quality leisure facilities is key to helping people lead active, happy, and healthy lives. Northgate Arena has been central to the lives of Chester residents for decades, and this update ensures it will continue to be for generations to come.”

The project reflects the council’s commitment to fostering wellbeing and sustainability, ensuring Northgate Arena remains a vibrant hub for the community.
