Chester Zoo has announced its Afterglow event will return this August, staying open until sunset across two special weeks from 1 to 17 August.

Visitors will be able to explore the zoo’s 37,000 animals after hours, from 3pm until 8pm, in an event organisers describe as their “biggest ever” evening experience. The zoo will be divided into five themed zones packed with entertainment, food, and immersive activities.

The event promises a unique chance to see some of the world’s most endangered species during their active “golden hour.” New attractions this year include life-sized dinosaur puppets with theatrical performances, a silent disco, giant inflatables, a Master Lego Builder experience, and roaming performers such as jugglers, acrobats, and stilt walkers.

For those seeking a quieter experience, a self-led well-being trail and guided meditation sessions will also be available.

Food and drink on offer will feature themed treats such as loaded nachos, daiquiris, churro caramel sundaes, and cupcakes served across the zoo.

All ticket sales will support Chester Zoo’s conservation work both locally and internationally, as the zoo operates as a registered charity.

Gemma Wright, Visitor Experience General Manager at Chester Zoo, said:
“Afterglow is back and this year it’s bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before. From inflatable dinosaurs and puppet parades to cocktails and a silent disco under the evening sky, there’s something for absolutely everyone.

“We’ve added more immersive theming across five completely unique zones this year, each one filled with activities, entertainment and of course, the 37,000 amazing animals that the zoo is home to. Whether it’s kids letting off steam on our fairground rides, couples drifting through the Islands on the Lazy River Boat Trip, or families gathering for a dinosaur show – Afterglow is the ultimate summer evening out.

“Importantly, every ticket supports our vital conservation work – both here in the UK and globally. So, while you’re enjoying your frozen treats and giant puppet selfies, you’re also helping protect some of the world’s most threatened species.”

For the first time, the event is sponsored by Sudocrem®, whose spokesperson Bethany Innes said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be the headline sponsor of Chester Zoo’s biggest ever Afterglow event.

“For generations, Sudocrem® has been a trusted go to for families, always there for cuts and grazes from everyday adventures. Partnering with the UK’s most loved zoo is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our shared passion for fun and discovery. As a brand rooted in care and protection, we’re thrilled to be part of an event that shines a light on the importance of conservation. We can’t wait to join in the magic of Afterglow!”

All of the zoo’s animal habitats, tropical houses, walkthrough aviaries and restaurants will be open during Afterglow.

Tickets start at £21 for adults and £14 for children aged 3 to 17. Zoo members can attend free but must pre-book in advance. Tickets are limited and expected to sell out quickly.
