Chester: Hickory’s Smokehouse temporarily closes for major refurbishment

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Hickory’s Smokehouse Chester has temporarily closed its doors for a six-week refurbishment, which will bring a host of exciting changes to its iconic riverside location.

Situated on The Groves by the River Dee, the restaurant will reopen on 19 February, combining a fresh new look with the Southern-inspired charm that has made it a community favourite since opening in 2010.

The refurbishment promises to deliver a more accessible and welcoming space for diners, with updates to the main restaurant area including new seating and flooring.

Designed to cater to groups and families, the refreshed interior will maintain Hickory’s relaxed atmosphere while ensuring comfort for all guests.

For families with children, a brand-new cinema room will be a standout feature.

The expanded space will be filled with comfy cinema seats, allowing kids to enjoy a movie and popcorn while parents unwind over a meal.

Taking full advantage of its stunning riverside setting, Hickory’s is introducing a new River Room.

This extension, replacing the Walled Garden, will feature glass walls and a retractable roof, offering diners picturesque views of the River Dee regardless of the weather.

Meanwhile, the dog-friendly veranda will be refreshed to enhance outdoor dining, and new seating areas will be added near the entrance and in a secluded garden space behind the River Room.

BBQ enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the popular Chef’s Bar is being expanded.

This prime spot offers guests a front-row seat to watch Pitmaster John and his team expertly slow-smoking Texas-style brisket and other BBQ classics, complete with the tantalising aroma of authentic Southern barbecue.

Reflecting on 15 years of serving Chester, the Hickory’s team shared their gratitude for the community’s support.

Inspired by founder Neil McDonnell’s road trip across America’s Southern States, the restaurant has become a hub of hospitality and a cornerstone of Chester’s vibrant riverside life.

From hosting marathons and Santa dashes to partnering with Chester Boat and Grosvenor Rowing Club, Hickory’s has embraced its riverside location in every sense.

In a heartfelt message to patrons, the team said: “We’ve proudly been smokin’ authentic BBQ, shakin’ cocktails, and meeting so many wonderful guests. But the time has come to give our smokers a rest and our restaurant some TLC.”

When Hickory’s Chester reopens, diners will also be able to enjoy an expanded menu with a new brunch offering, starting daily from 10am.

Brunch options will include Southern favourites like pancake stacks, chicken-fried waffles, and Hickory’s muffins, paired with coffee or even a Bloody Mary, making it the perfect spot for a post-stroll treat by the river.

Bookings for 19 February onwards are now open, with updates on the refurbishment shared regularly on Hickory’s Facebook page.
