CCTV and lighting upgrades planned for Connah’s Quay Docks

News and Info from Deeside, Flintshire, North Wales

Flintshire County Council has secured £290,000 from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) to fund a series of improvements at the Connah’s Quay Dock area.

The new initiative aims to tackle the long-standing crime and environmental issues that have plagued the Dock Road area, which accounts for a substantial proportion of reported crime in Connah’s Quay.

The funding, part of a larger programme targeting various towns across Flintshire, was approved in May and work has already begun.

As part of the improvements, the project will install CCTV cameras, upgrade lighting, and enhance environmental features to address fly-tipping and the presence of abandoned vehicles and boats.

According to Cllr David Healey, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Economy, the Dock Road area has been a persistent concern for both the Council and local Police.

“The Dock Road area of Connah’s Quay was in dire need of improvement,” Cllr Healey explained. “Investment from SPF funds is a crucial first step in making the dock area safer and, with such potential, hopefully in time, and with further investment, a much more appealing place for residents and visitors.”

For years, Dock Road has suffered from neglect, leading to high levels of crime, anti-social behaviour, and environmental issues.

The area currently accounts for 75% of all reported crime in Connah’s Quay, making it a priority target for the Council and local enforcement agencies. Inadequate lighting and the lack of surveillance have exacerbated these issues, with Police and enforcement officers facing significant challenges when investigating incidents.

With the new funding, Flintshire County Council is aiming to “design out” crime in the area, improving safety and reducing the fear of crime for residents and visitors alike.

In addition to the practical upgrades, there are hopes that the improvements will attract more foot traffic to the dock, gradually transforming it into a space the community can enjoy.

The Council’s broader goal is to enhance the appeal of Connah’s Quay Dock as a community asset, making it a safer and more welcoming place for everyone.

Cllr Healey highlighted the potential for future investment, noting, “This is just the beginning. With ongoing efforts and further support, we hope to see Dock Road become an area of pride for the Connah’s Quay community.”

The SPF funding aims not only to improve infrastructure but also to foster a sense of security and community well-being.
