A Christmas single by a North Wales rock band has been recorded at Wrexham Glyndwr University after being inspired by a snowy visit to an international festival.

Wrexham-based Baby Brave were inspired to write their track “It’s Christmas, La” while playing in Canada as part of a Welsh delegation of bands to a music festival this Autumn.

Singer Emmi Manteau said: “The track was inspired by a trip we went on to the Yukon, Northern Canada.

“It was a very remote area, surrounded by mountains and tall trees, famous for its wild bears, and with the northern lights happening around us as we slept. We’d been invited to play at Break Out West Festival (October 2019) and went along with FOCUS Wales.

“Halfway through the trip, we witnessed an incredible snowstorm, which started the idea of creating a Christmas song.

“On our return, we recorded a demo of the song which we sent off to a girls’ school near Oswestry to ask them to sing backing vocals. The song channels the isolation of the Yukon, but adds the hope that the Christmas season brings – and most importantly is a subtle nod to our hometown Wrexham, la!”

Baby Brave bassist Andrew Stokes – who is currently studying a Music Technology degree at Glyndwr – helped to record the choir’s contribution to the single inGlyndwr’s state-of-the-art Wall recording studio after hearing them sing at an event near Whitchurch.

He said: “We already knew we were planning this festive song, and when I heard the girls sing I knew they’d be a great fit.

“It was an incredible experience for us to work with them and they brought a fantastic festive energy to the recording – all in their Christmas jumpers!

“I’d also like to thank everyone at Glyndwr for their help in recording the single. As a student here, I know just how good the tech you get to use in the Wallrecording studio is, and to be able show it off – both to visitors to campus and by recording our Christmas song with it – has been great!”
