Full-time undergraduate students in Wales can now apply for student finance for the 2026/27 academic year, with the Student Loans Company opening its application service.

Students do not need a confirmed place on a course to apply.

Course details can be added or changed later through an online account once an offer has been accepted.

Students in Wales are applying for a Plan 2 student loan, which can include a tuition fee loan of up to £9,790 to cover course costs, as well as a maintenance loan to help with living expenses.

Steven Darling, the Student Loans Company’s Director of Customer Experience, said: “If you’re planning on attending university or college in the 26/27 academic year, and are applying for student finance, my key advice is to submit your application as early as you can.”

He added: “Once you’ve applied, you’ll be able to track your progress easily online, so you’ll always know what’s happening without needing to get in touch.”

Applications take around four weeks to process.

Students can track the status of their application through their online account and will be notified if anything is outstanding.

Before starting an application, students will need their National Insurance number, passport details and bank account information.

Those applying for finance based on household income will also need a parent’s or guardian’s email address, as they will be asked to provide income details separately.

Students who have studied before — even if the previous course was self-funded — are advised to apply early, as previous study can affect eligibility.

Anyone who has studied before and is returning to education should use their original online account rather than creating a new one.

Students who have had no contact with their parents for over a year may be able to apply as an estranged student, with applications handled by a dedicated team.

Additional support may be available for students with children, additional needs, or those on medical, social work or teaching courses.

Repayment does not begin until the April after a student finishes their course, and only when earnings exceed the repayment threshold.

The application window for part-time undergraduate and postgraduate student finance will open later in the spring.

Full information on how to apply and what support is available can be found at studentfinancewales.co.uk.
