All schools in Flintshire will be closed on Thursday due to expected snow
Flintshire Council has directed all schools in the county to close on Thursday and switch to online learning due to expected snow.
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow and ice across north Wales effective from 8am to 3pm tomorrow.
A yellow alert for snow in Flintshire is also in place from 6 am to 6pm on Thursday.
The forecast predicts heavy snowfall and icy conditions, likely to cause widespread disruptions throughout Thursday which could impact parts of Flintshire.
In an email to parents and carers, Elfed High School said: “Due to the Amber weather warning that is in place across Flintshire tomorrow, the Local Authority has directed all schools to close and to switch to online learning.”
“Students should structure their day in a way that allows them to follow their normal timetable. They can access their work by logging onto their ClassCharts account.”
“We are hoping to be in a position to open school on Friday and we will keep you updated via our usual channels. ”
Cllr Dave Healey posted on social media:
“In response to the weather forecast it has been decided that all schools in Flintshire will be closed tomorrow. ”
“Snow is forecast for high ground and there is advice that people only do essential journeys.”
“Some staff travel some distance but school transport and transport for pupils with special educational needs will be impacted.”
The expected weather conditions include persistent and, at times, heavy snowfall starting Thursday morning and slowly easing later in the day.
As milder air arrives from the south, there’s a potential for snow to turn into freezing rain, especially on higher routes above 200 meters.
Accumulations of 10-15 cm of snow are anticipated across the warning area, with some locations, particularly those at higher elevations, possibly receiving 20-25 cm. Additionally, strong and gusty easterly winds may cause snow to drift in places.
The Met Office has said the impact of this severe weather is substantial, with the likelihood of some rural communities becoming temporarily isolated.
The weather warnings cover Flintshire, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Powys, Wrexham, and Shropshire, to stay informed and prepared.
