A new Lidl could be coming to Broughton. Here’s what’s been proposed
Plans for a new Lidl store on vacant land next to Broughton Shopping Park have been submitted to Flintshire County Council.
The application seeks permission to build a food store on 1.3 hectares of unused grassland at the junction of Chester Road and the shopping park’s access road in Broughton, opposite an existing Aldi supermarket.
The site sits directly north of the existing retail complex, includes a Tesco and M&S Foodhall.
The store proposed is just under 2,000 square metres in size and would have 138 car parking spaces.
Opening hours would be 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The application was submitted by The British Land Company PLC, which also owns Broughton Shopping Park itself.
Planning documents prepared on the company’s behalf say the store would create up to 40 full and part-time jobs, though they note staffing levels have not yet been finalised.
The Broughton proposal follows a run of discount supermarket openings across the area.
Lidl opened a new store on the High Street in Connah’s Quay on 5 December 2024, replacing its Queensferry store which had been on Deeside Retail Park for nearly 30 years.
Aldi opened a new store at the Airfields development on Welsh Road in Sealand on 14 August 2025, bringing a fourth Aldi to Flintshire alongside existing stores in Mold, Buckley and Flint.
Flintshire County Council told the applicant at a pre-application meeting in September 2025 that the site is acceptable in principle for development under the council’s local planning framework, which sets out where and how development can take place across Flintshire.
The application has been assigned to a case officer and the public consultation period has not yet opened.
Flintshire County Council has a target date of 16 July 2026 to decide the application.
