Westbound A55 in Cheshire reopens following earlier collision involving three lorries

Update: The road is back open and traffic has cleared.

Previous reports: Latest traffic reports still shows the A55 westbound in Cheshire is closed following a three lorry crash.

Traffic website Inrix states: “Road closed and queueing traffic due to recovery work and accident, two lorries involved on A55 Westbound between J40 A51 Tarvin Road (Vicars Cross Interchange) and J39 A41 (Sainsbury’s / Boughton Heath Roundabout).”

“Congestion to the M53. Recovery is confirmed to be ongoing around 13:20.

“The accident occurred just after 10:00 within the queues for the emergency roadworks between J39 and J38. Detour in operation – via Chester following the Hallow Square using the A41 Ring Road.”

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has said: “Shortly after 10am firefighters were called to reports of a collision on the A55 in the Littleton/Vicars Cross area of Chester.

On arrival crews discovered that the collision involved three heavy goods vehicles.

No-one was trapped inside any of the vehicles and none of the HGVs contained hazardous materials.

The road was closed and firefighters made the scene safe.

They were in attendance for around 45 minutes before handing the incident over to Highways England.”

Highways England has said “there is now a build up of traffic on the M53 S/B as you approach the link with the A55 at J12, M53. Please take extra care when approaching this location.”

Highways England has said a diversion is in operation:

  • Leave the A55 at J40
  • At the roundabout take the third exit on to the A51 westbound
  • At the junction with the A41 turn left
  • Head south on the A41 to the roundabout with the A5115
  • Take the second exit and re-join the A55

Road users are also advised to allow extra time for their journey.

The North Wales bound side of the A55 in Cheshire is currently blocked following a collision involving three lorries.

The collision happened just after 10am and occurred within queuing traffic near emergency roadworks near Junction 39 at Boughton.

The road is blocked westbound  between J40 A51 Tarvin Road (Vicars Cross Interchange) and J39 A41 (Sainsbury’s / Boughton Heath Roundabout)

Police have said the carriageway will be blocked for some time.

Latest traffic report for the area states: “oad closed and queueing traffic due to accident, two lorries involved on A55 Westbound between J40 A51 Tarvin Road (Vicars Cross Interchange) and J39 A41 (Sainsbury’s / Boughton Heath Roundabout).

Congestion to the M53. Traffic has been stopped since just after 10:00. Accident had occurred within the queues for the emergency roadworks between J39 and J38. Diversion in operation – via Chester following the Hallow Square along Vicars Cross Road and Whitchurch Road.”
