Massive Great Crested Newt Turns up at Wepre Park.
The Countryside Ranger team in Connah’s Quay’s Wepre Park had a very creative idea, when it came to what to do with a pile of unsightly soil left over from a drainage project.
They decided that it should become a piece of local art and Countryside Ranger Tim Johnson set about working closely with local contractor Arwyn Parry to sculpt the soil into the shape of a Great Crested Newt.
Wepre Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the endangered species, so the ranger team decided that this would be an apt way to make use of the soil.
Councillor Bernie Attridge, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“The sculpture is definitely worth a look! Come along to Wepre, where it can be found near the top football pitch, at the front of the park. It has now been fenced off as it will be planted with wildflower seeds and the fencing will allow the plants to grow.
A panel of pictures can be seen in the Visitor Centre showing the project from start to finish, as the newt came to life.”
Tim Johnson said: “The project took a bit of planning to make sure that it was feasible, but, as it developed, the skill and dexterity of Arwyn really made things simple. The result is just what I was hoping for!”
