Welsh Water sets out compensation after Flintshire burst main

Welsh Water has confirmed compensation arrangements for customers affected by the burst water main in Broughton, Flintshire, which left homes and businesses without supplies last week.
The burst on a major strategic trunk main near the Bretton treatment works affected residents and businesses across Flintshire. Areas impacted included Flint, Holywell, Ffynnongroyw, Greenfield, Llanerch y Mor, Mostyn, Oakenholt, Talacre, Whitford, Queensferry, Shotton, Connah’s Quay, Garden City, Hawarden, Mancot and Sandycroft.
For household customers, eligible households will receive £30 for every 12 hours their supply was affected. Payments will be made automatically within 20 days, either directly into bank accounts or by cheque for those without. Customers in arrears will see the payment credited to their Welsh Water account.
For business customers, each business will receive £75 for every 12 hours their supply was affected. In addition, Welsh Water has agreed to make goodwill contributions of up to £2500 towards certain costs or loss of gross profit.
Businesses must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being permanently based at the affected location, being registered with HMRC, and qualifying for the £75 standard payment.
Applications for goodwill contributions can cover loss of gross profit, additional operating costs, or both. Businesses with insurance in place are expected to make claims through their insurer, although Welsh Water has said it may consider contributions towards policy excesses with adequate evidence.
All applications require supporting documents, such as daily sales figures, accounts, or invoices, and must be submitted via the relevant webforms. Businesses may only submit one webform application.
Welsh Water has said it aims to assess applications within 20 working days of receipt, though timescales may vary depending on complexity.
Further information, including frequently asked questions and guidance on applications, is available on Welsh Water’s website, here.
