Jack Sargeant MS welcomed the Welsh Government Minister for North Wales Lesley Griffiths to Tata Steel in Shotton on Thursday

The Alyn and Deeside Senedd Member has long championed the Shotton site he said it has “a huge role to play in making the steel industry greener and has ambitions for it to be the first carbon neutral site in the UK.”

Jack wanted the Minister to see first-hand the importance of Welsh Government investment in Shotton as well as hear from management, workers and Trade Unions at the site.

He said: “I was delighted to welcome the Minister to Tata, this site is vital to the economy of north Wales and is at the cutting edge of steel production globally.  As a trained engineer I understand the value of this steel in developing the next generation of carbon neutral products.

“I welcome the Welsh Labour Government’s ongoing support for the steel industry and would like to see the Tory Government take the same attitude.  We are a community that was forged around manufacturing and these high skilled jobs are key to that continuing.”

Sam Baker, Unite TU Rep at TATA Steel Shotton said: “Steel is a strategic industry and is facing the challenge of modernising in a world that requires decarbonisation. The UK government has the opportunity to make the country a key player in the green steel movement but to do this it will require funding.

“We as the 1000’s of employees across the UK working in steel, would like to see a commitment from the Tory government in not only securing the future of our jobs but also the health of our planet for the next generation”
