Theatr Clwyd’s new planting scheme to boost biodiversity

Theatr Clwyd is incorporating eco-friendly landscaping into its redevelopment to support biodiversity and create a greener, more sustainable cultural venue.
The planting scheme, designed by Snowdonia-based Garden Designer Dan Bristow, aims to provide vital food sources for birds, bees, and butterflies. Bristow, whose work earned a Gold medal at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, has selected species that will enhance the landscape while supporting local wildlife.
As part of the first stage of planting, Theatr Clwyd’s team members picked up trowels to plant climbing hydrangeas, which will grow up the theatre’s walls and offer nectar to pollinators. Additionally, pyracantha hedges have been planted to serve as a year-round food source for birds.
The redevelopment of Theatr Clwyd, set to start reopening in June, aims to integrate sustainability at every level. Alongside the planting scheme, the theatre is incorporating renewable energy, rainwater recycling, and energy-efficient design.
Liam Evans-Ford, Executive Director of Theatr Clwyd, said:
“We are thrilled to integrate sustainable planting into our redevelopment. These plants enhance the aesthetic appeal of Theatr Clwyd, support local wildlife, and are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant.”
Theatr Clwyd, Wales’ largest producing theatre, continues to be a leader in community engagement and artist development. With its ongoing redevelopment, it aims to create a space where culture and sustainability go hand in hand.
